MAURO DI DOMENICO

THE SHOW

“Nati in Riva al Mondo”
“Born on the shore of the World”

-In Viaggio con Neruda-
- on a journey with Neruda –

Narrating through music, words and images.
The concert is a game between past and present, connecting the melody that evokes a certain past and the rhythm of modern-day. An adventure that starts from the South and arrives … in the South. A bridge that unites the people, music and poetry of Naples and Santiago, Chile.

The video projected images that flow during the concert are of great emotional impact and of fascinating interest. Among other things, you will see unpublished works with LUIS SEPULVEDA, COMPAY SEGUNDO, INTI-ILLIMANI or exclusively with VIOLETA PARRA and the poet PABLO NERUDA.

The concert lives moments of uncommon pieces of music expressed with the delicacy and simplicity that distinguishes some musicians. The words are entrusted to the unforgettable voice of another great friend: FERRUCCIO AMENDOLA.
Ferruccio takes us by the hand and guides us throughout the concert, tying together sounds and images using a tone that seems as if we’ve known him all our lives.

- The show is full of emotional stimulus without ever falling in “the way we were” or in proclamations drenched with rhetoric. The world is full of Pinochet. Of course my intent is to always stimulate the memory until each one of us can recognize our own Pinochet in time. Art has this moral obligation. The Chile of today and the one I lived among the young Chileans reflects a globalized reality in those people who are on the edge between the pangs of memory to not forget and loss of memory for a rebirth of identity -

“Born on the shore of the world” is now also a CD + DVD (Loro di Napoli Rai-Trade) in collaboration with
FUNDACION PABLO NERUDA GOVERNO DEL CILE

MAURO DI DOMENICO – BIOGRAPHY
Son of an artist, his father was the tenor LELLO DI DOMENICO considered master GIUSEPPE ANEPETA’s pupil in the school of classical Neapolitan Song.

He received his diploma in classical guitar with the highest grades and honors under the guidance of master EDUARDO CALIENDO the author and arranger of ROBERTO MUROLO’s “Grande Antologia della Canzone Napoletana” (Great Anthology of the Neapolitan Song). His first impact with the public took place when he was very young with MUROLO and CALIENDO.

He took courses to perfect his playing with ALIRO DIAZ and it is with him that he acquired an in depth knowledge of the Campesina and Latin-American folk music.

In Cordoba, Andalusia, under the guidance of PACO PE—A he learns the art and technique of Flamenco music. In these years he came in contact with INTI-ILLIMANI and started a long collaboration with them that brought him to Latin America and all around Europe.

At the same time he was a part of the group MUSICANOVA and then of the NUOVA COMPAGNIA DI CANTO POPOLARE playing in tours throughout the world. He boasts many artistic collaborations with the director MAURIZIO SCAPARRO among these are: NAPOLI A VENEZIA, DON CHISCIOTTE; PULCINELLA; LIOLA’, LE MILLE E UNA NOTTEŠ.

Since 1985 he has been collaborating with MASSIMO RANIERI in theatre, cinema, television projects and live concerts. For 5 years now he has taken care of the musical arrangements-direction of his latest live CD’s OGGI O DIMANE (Today or Tomorrow) and NUN E’ ACQUA (It’s not Water).

He participated in MAURO PAGANI’s album “Domani” (Tomorrow) and the very recent “Creuza de ma 2004”.

PRESS RELEASES

…Mauro Di Domenico, guitarist and author who prefers to look to the past for what regards sounds…
… A precious work of pieces that are splendidly played, that show the rigor and value of this very refined guitarist, a real rarity in these meagre times, something that shouldn’t be missed.

Paolo Zaccagnini – IL MESSAGGERO (Rome)

an inebriating technique, solidly anchored to a classic base that fans out on the warm melodies and rhythmic beats of Latin music… classic, flamenco or South American, his guitar almost touches the very virtuoso always and only in function with its real voice, the one of “street instrument”, that gathers the musical humus of everyday life.

Rosella Battisti – L’UNITA’ (Rome)

Mauro Di Domenico is one of the most interesting musicians in this new generation, passionate about Mediterranean sounds and songs, he is able to explore sentiments and atmospheres that are always different. He is one of the best exponents of Italian “world music”, music composed of water and sand, filled with warmth and passion, of melody and rhythm.

Ernesto Assante – LA REPUBBLICA Trovaroma

A letter from Ennio Morricone
- Rome April 10th, 1996

I listened to Mauro Di Domenico for the first time one night at the Palladium Theater. I immediately had the sensation of finding myself in front of a musical case, rare in the music that he plays.
(I don’t like amateurs that try to sell sounds without any support and without a thought to support you.)
I got some of Di Domenico’s recordings and listened to them.
I found confirmation of my instincts and discovered new values! The original use of the classical guitar united with the modern guitar opened the door to a result of great, rare, and original suggestion (never cold). His use of classical and New age sounds put him in the vanguard category of musicians that count during this difficult and unclear period in history in which everything is temporary and often results in a bluff.
In faith,
Ennio Morricone

Collaborations
In his intense career Mauro Di Domenico has collaborated with many artists. The friendship that ties him for years to the Inti-Illimani has allowed him to grow musically by learning how to play difficult Latin rhythms and traditional South American instruments.

“With Mauro we also realized a tour in Latin America where we were able to see how this musician, with a Mediterranean education, attained, captured and creatively re-proposed the themes of South American music in a notable way” – Inti-Illimani

Another friendship that started in this field is with the Chilean writer Luis Sep_lveda, with whom interesting projects are being realized: among these is Sep_lveda’s first film, “Nowhere”, where Mauro Di Domenico interpreted the music written by Nicola Piovani, and the project NATI IN RIVA AL MONDO (Born on the shore of the world).

When Mauro spoke to me about his project of telling the story of his journey, which was without a doubt unusual – He only started out as a new member of the group Inti-Illimani, but at the same moment he changed into a traveller towards the heart of the Chilean people, towards the incandescent magma of a tragedy that touched the world, and that radically changed our lives – the first thing I thought was that this was going to be yet another testimony among the many that were written, but when I had the chance to read the notes from his trip I understood that Mauro Di Domenico’s aim was to revive the more human side, the one that gathers the pain and humor, happiness and sadness […]. Naturally I told him yes, that I wanted to be a part of his story, and that I wanted to participate in his project. – Luis Sep_lveda

For the “Nati in riva al mondo” (Born on the shore of the World) project, Mauro Di Domenico has also collaborated with, among other artists, AngČl Parra and Ferruccio Amendola, who are also two of his close friends.

For many years now Mauro Di Domenico has been collaborating with Massimo Ranieri. Recently he took care of the musical direction and the research for traditional songs that make up Massimo Ranieri’s trilogy of albums dedicated to Neapolitan songs, the last of which is in the process of being produced.
He took care of the musical direction for Massimo Ranieri’s TV show “Citofonare Calone” (aired on Rai-Uno), where some very famous international musical guests participated like Khaled, Goran Bregovic, Compay Segundo, Mauro Pagani and others.
