Loro
di Napoli heads the project (begun in 1929 by Raffaele Calice)
proposed by mandolin players Mario Squillante and Leonardo
Massa for the preservation of the traditional Neapolitan
mandolin.
Their goal is to free the instrument from its stereotype
of only being proper for a pizzeria or a "sofa"literature.
The initiative successfully resulted in the foundation of
a school and the creation of a chamber orchestra. The Academy
represented Italy in some of the most important festivals
(Les Allumieres in France,Rudolf Folk Festival in Berlin),
and collaborates with San Carlo Theatre, San Pietro Maiella
Academy of Music, and with the Ancient Music Centre "Pietà
dei Turchini".
The Academy's recordings have aired on Italian, French,
and German radios. In addition it has
produced several albums. Its live project, "Scherza
l'alma", is an exposition of mandolines throughout
the ages.
